How to Choose an Angle Grinder for Construction Projects

Power, disc diameter and RPM are the first three things to check. This guide explains how to match the tool to your work.

Choosing an angle grinder is not only about the lowest price. Three parameters decide whether the tool suits your work.

1. Power (Watt)

For light household work 500–700 W is enough. For cutting rebar or continuous grinding on site, use at least 800 W. Underpowered tools overheat and fail sooner.

2. Disc Diameter

  • 100 mm — most common, light, good for detail work
  • 115 mm — a good compromise
  • 180–230 mm — heavy cutting, but heavy and needs two hands

3. RPM

Metal cutting discs are generally safe at 11,000 RPM. Make sure the machine RPM does not exceed the disc maximum — this is the most common cause of disc breakage and injury.
